Needs: 1. COG Group Assistant Volunteer: Use role playing and coaching/motivation skills to help kids learn to make better choices and become aware of how negative choices affect others.
  2. Group Orientation Assistant Volunteer: Help prepare and support the Dempke staff during volunteer orientation evenings.
  3. Office Help Volunteer: Perform a variety of office skills including answering and placing phone calls, computer work, photocopying, and other administrative assistance in the Dempke Center office. 
  4. Specialized Volunteer: Help dysfunctional learners to overcome handicapping conditions. The areas of concentration include learning disability, reading and math development. 
  5. Program Volunteer: Run projects such as arts and crafts, construction projects, chess, gardening, motivational speaker events, knitting, or other activities.  
  6. Spiritual Volunteer: Assist the boys in establishing a value system based on belief and commitment. Help the residents to establish a moral and ethical state of being. Act as a role model. 
  7. Tutor Volunteer: Work one-to-one with residents to help them with their school work. Serve as a role model and encourage success in school. 
  8. Victim Advocate Volunteer: Place calls to probation cases. Through communication with parents or guardians, help them work out plans to pay fees owed.

A Safe Place

Description: A Safe Place provides shelter, court advocacy, referrals and comprehensive counseling programs for victims of domestic violence - women and children who have been physically, verbally, or emotionally abused. Shelter stays are available to women and their children who must seek safety from their abusers while they develop plans to lead violence-free lives. Staff and trained volunteers offer immediate counseling and support to victims of domestic abuse using our dedicated crisis lines available both in English and in Spanish. Both individual and group counseling services are available to women and their children residing at A Safe Place, as well as to nonresidential clients. Our staff advocates on behalf of women and children in the areas of housing, employment, education, public assistance. Our Court Advocacy Program also assists victims of domestic violence.

St Mary of Vernon Catholic Church

Description: Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS):
Every Thursday from October to April, SMV is a host site for the homeless of Lake County through PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter). This Ministry relies on many volunteers and donations in order to function efficiently. During the summer months, volunteers make lunches for the homeless at our Parish Center kitchen.

Furniture Ministry:
Furniture Ministry matches up used serviceable furniture, donated by parishioners, with needy families in our community. With the help of volunteers, furniture is picked up and delivered every Saturday morning from 9 until Noon. Both adults and teens with strong backs are invited to assist in this most gratifying ministry.

Sharing Hands:
Sharing Hands is SMV’s social outreach ministry. Developed and staffed by parishioners, Sharing Hands attempts to respond to requests for food, clothing, shelter, furniture or other physical needs of any community members. Sharing Hands maintains an office and food pantry in the lower level of the Administration Center. Since its initial fund drive in 1993, the program has depended entirely on parishioners’ donations. Monetary support comes through an annual envelope collection and a Lenten coin collection.
Needs: - Volunteers for PADS (homeless shelter) from Sept - April
- Organizing and delivering food to those in need (Saturdays) *kids can participate
- Delivering furniture to those in need (Saturdays)

Compassion

Description: Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. Founded by the Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952, Compassion began providing Korean War orphans with food, shelter, education and health care, as well as Christian training. Today, compassion helps more than one million children in 25 countries.
Needs: Sponsor a child to provide education, food, health care, and a chance to hear the gospel. Cost is $38/month.
